Understand the Facts of Horsepower

Horsepower is a term that has been used to describe engine power for hundreds of years now. But even though everyone who drives is pretty familiar with the term not everyone really knows what it actually means.

Back in the late 18th century, James Watt first coined the term in order to help him sell steam engines. To make the concept of engine power more relatable to his clients, he determined that a mill-horse could pull 22,000-foot pounds a minute. He rounded that up to 33,000 and called that one horsepower. We have been using that formula and that term to describe engine power ever since.

Obviously, that is the short form explanation of horsepower, and it gets more in depth, especially with today's modern engines.
